That is the basic takeaway from a new review led by Victoria University researcher Dr. James Broatch. The paper, published in Trends in Neurosciences, suggests that physical activity does more than just pump blood or build muscle. It seems to supercharge the glymphatic system. This is the brain’s internal waste disposal network. It runs primarily while you sleep.

“If we don’t have opportunities for the brain to effectively clean out the junk from the day… that build-up is damaging,” Dr. Broatch noted.

We know exercise helps us age better. Everyone knows that. But how it shields the mind from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease has always been a bit of a black box. This study shines a light inside. With over 10 million new dementia diagnoses annually and no cure in sight, understanding this mechanism is urgent. Not just medically. Existentially.

Why the glymphatic system needs a boost

We don’t know yet. Dr. Broatch is currently running new trials to find these answers. The current review is a synthesis of existing data, not a final rulebook.

But the general direction is clear. Regular movement matters. Specifically, the kind that raises your heart rate.

The irony of aging and sleep

Here is the catch. Good sleep gets harder as we age. That is when we need it most to protect the brain. It feels like a cruel joke. The very process that cleans the mind becomes less efficient right when the mind needs the most help.

Exercise might be the workaround. If sleep is broken, maybe sweat can compensate. Or at least support the process.
